Pines basketball event to benefit future stars

By Gary Ridderbusch

Many college basketball teams kick off the season with special events for fans on the first night of practice as a way to build excitement for the upcoming season.

Locally, the Northland Pines Basketball Association (NPBA) is trying to build interest and excitement in the basketball program at Northland Pines High School, as well as at the lower grades in the school district.

Watching the 7th and 8th grade teams playing out their schedule over the past weeks I am struck by one thing. Of the schools: MHLT, AVW, LDF, North Lakeland and Northland Pines only one stands out far above the rest. That team is the LDF 7th and 8th grade girls. I have not had the chance to watch the boys this year. But what also is true is that only the LDF girls team plays man to man defense. And that fact is one reason why the high school teams are not quite as good as they might otherwise be at this game. The feeder schools should play ONLY man defense, Who says this besides myself? Well how about Bobbie Knight, Bo Ryan, Mike Krzyzewski and John Wooden. They all recommend playing man defense only at that level. It is the only way to actually teach the game of basketball. That, I believe, is what we want done!
