Conover man to be arraigned
A 33-year-old Conover man, charged with three counts of manufacturing or delivery of marijuana, was bound over for arraignment in Vilas County Circuit Court last week.Andrew M. Hammes was arrested June 19 following a search warrant at his resident at 4246 Sugar Schack Lane in Conover. Investigating officers reported finding marijuana, drug paraphernalia and $7,000 in cash at the home.
According to the complaint, Hammes denied selling marijuana but told investigators he smoked it for personal use.
Hammes is suspected in being involved in the selling of 4 ounces of marijuana May 9 for $1,400, 4 ounces May 17 for $1,300 and 4 ounces June 12 for $1,400, all in controlled purchases.
Hammes’ arrest came following the execution of search warrants at the residence of Audie B. Lapp at 4710 Highway B in Land O’ Lakes June 12 and at the Bear Trap Inn in June 19, where Hammes works.
Lapp subsequently was charged with three counts of manufacturing or delivery of marijuana and one charge of maintaining a drug trafficking place. Lapp will have a pretrial conference Dec. 18 at 10 a.m.
At Lapp’s residence, investigators said they found marijuana, packaging, scale and $1,200 in prerecorded currency.
In a backpack in the Bear Trap Inn office, investigators said they found a baggie containing green flakes and small pieces of green vegetable-like substance resting at the bottom of the backpack, both consistent with marijuana. Outside the business, underneath a log, they found a lighter and a glass smoking pipe with burnt residue.
Officers were told that when Hammes is working at the restaurant, he goes to that location and allegedly smokes marijuana during breaks.
In other felony cases, Carl L. Anderson, 31, of Conover, charged with burglary of a building or dwelling and uttering a forgery, both as a repeater, waived his preliminary hearing, was bound over for arraignment and pleaded not guilty. A pretrial conference was set for Jan. 15 at 10:45 a.m.
According to the complaint, Anderson allegedly broke into Joe’s Pool Hall through a window Sept. 2 or Sept. 3 and took about $640 in cash and a $75 check made out to cash that he had cashed at the business earlier in the day. The check was one of four that another man reported missing from his checkbook.
Anderson also is charged with misdemeanor theft as a repeater and possession of drug paraphernalia. Anderson was previously convicted of uttering a forgery Oct. 11, 2010.
Jeffrey S. Schuman, 27, of Lac du Flambeau, charged with three counts of felony bail jumping waived his preliminary hearing, was bound over for arraignment and pleaded not guilty. He had a pretrial conference set for Dec. 11 at 11:15 a.m.
According to the complaint, Schuman was on bond for charges of substantial battery May 16 and allegedly consumed intoxicants Nov. 1. According to the complaint, he had a preliminary breath test of 0.208%. At his arrest, officers allegedly found marijuana in a bag in his pants pocket.
David W. Smith, 43, of Lac du Flambeau, charged with seventh-offense operating while intoxicated, had his sentencing hearing adjourned to Jan. 7 at 9 a.m. Smith was arrested July 14 in Lac du Flambeau after officers conducted a traffic stop because he was going 45 mph in a 25 mph zone. According to the complaint, his preliminary breath test was 0.26%. A charge of misdemeanor bail jumping was dismissed upon a motion from Assistant District Attorney David Breedlove. Smith’s $1,500 cash bond will be held until sentencing is complete.
Lawrence J. Thompson, 27, of Lac du Flambeau, charged with manufacturing or deliver of marijuana and second-offense possession of marijuana, waived his preliminary hearing, was bound over for arraignment and pleaded not guilty. A?pretrial conference was set for Aug. 8 at 10 a.m.
According to the complaint, Thompson allegedly sold 2.2 grams of marijuana for $20 in a controlled purchase July 25 in Lac du Flambeau.
