Great predators vital to healthy ecosystem PDF Print E-mail

Dear Editor:

The ill-conceived decision by the state of Wisconsin to allow the hunting and trapping of wolves flies in the face of facts that wildlife biologists are discovering about the essential role the great predators play worldwide in maintaining healthy ecosystems.

As an example, since the reintroduction of wolves in Yellowstone National Park, the overpopulation of elk has been mitigated, leading to improved growth of trees and shrubs, especially along stream and river banks, and in turn leading to greater diversity of wildlife, such as beaver, songbirds and frogs —?in short, a healthier, more diverse ecosystem.

One of Wisconsin’s great thinkers and conservationists, Aldo Leopold, recognized the important role of predators. As concerned citizens, we can carry on his legacy by educating ourselves and others, organizing to oppose such destructive practices and electing representatives who are well informed on matters of ecology and willing to stand up for sound principles.

Let us be guided by scientific evidence and the force of reason and compassion, not by arrogance, greed, ignorance and outdated ideas based on myth and prejudice.

I have had my own run-ins with wolves. It was after those that I began to dislike them. Before that, I was an ardent supporter of the animals.

It was not because I was basing my beliefs on myth and prejudice. If you live in the forests of Wisconsin long enough, you begin to see things that affect your views.

And as Ray commented, we are the apex predator... the circle is complete.

I agree totally, we (mankind) are the top predator, we kill wolves! The circle is complete!
Merry Christmas and good hunting
