Snow, cold needed for winter recreation

The lack of snow in December has resulted in a slow start to the snowmobile season, but measurable precipitation the next seven days could still lead to a tourism boost between Christmas Day and New Years Day.

Vilas County trails are open, but are considered to be in poor early-season riding condition. Oneida County officials have yet to open their trail system due to the minimal snow cover.

While trails often open in early to mid-December, the period between Christmas and New Years is one of the peak snowmobiling time frames of the season.
