Thomas “Tom” Warren Sonnenberg passed away in home hospice at 5:45 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012, in Lansing, Mich., just short of his 88th birthday.

In February 2008, he had moved from Wisconsin to Michigan, his birth state, where his eldest son, Curt, cared for him until his death. Tom suffered from Alzheimer’s disease.

Tom graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison post-World War II and spent the majority of his working life as a Registered Civil Engineer for the state of

Wisconsin’s Department of Transportation.

It was at the University of Wisconsin in Madison that Tom met and married his wife, Gertrude Jane Fisher, later returning to her hometown of Eagle River, Wis., to live and raise their family.

Tom was a Naval Officer and aviation navigator, having served prior to beginning work as an engineer.

Tom also was active in the community, having served on the Eagle River School Board.

He was a member of the local Lions Club and was a lifetime Rotarian and Freemason, with his eldest son, Curt, proudly following in his footsteps in that regard.

Tom was born in Ontonagon, Mich., on March 21, 1925, to Erwin Sonnenberg and Mary Elaine (Maude) Huntsinger, but the family immediately moved to West Bend, Wis., where Tom eventually graduated from high school and where he was a standout varsity football and baseball player.

Later in life in Eagle River, Tom grew to love hockey and faithfully watched his boys, Curt and Stew, participate all over the state and in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

As it happens, Tom’s son, Curt, was later attracted to the Upper Peninsula, and in particular Ontonagon, where he currently owns a commercial building in keeping with his father’s spirit.

Tom is survived by his three children, Curt, a lawyer in Lansing, Mich., Stew, a civil engineer in Folsom, Calif., and Tina, a rural postal carrier in Eagle River, Wis.

Tom also is survived by four grandchildren, Adam, McLean, Alexa and Drew.

Memorials are private, but condolences may be directed to Thomas Warren Sonnenberg Estate, Attn: Curtis B. Sonnenberg, PR, c/o Sonnenberg Law Offices, PLLC, 1100 W. Ottawa St., Lansing, MI 48915-1730, through whom they will be shared with family.
