He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Provost Marshall. He was a lifetime member of the 32nd Division Red Arrow Infantry Veteran Association and was the last original member of the Three Lakes American Legion Post 0431. He was a honored member of the May 2012 Never Forgotten Honor Flight.

His hobbies included traveling, he was an avid sportsman and a 32nd Degree Mason.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Elizabeth (Betty); one daughter, Jacquline Stiefel; one brother; two sisters; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

A private ceremony was held. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Honor Flight organization.
