Chamber of commerce issues report on events during 2012

The Three Lakes Chamber of Commerce recently released a report regarding town events during 2012, detailing the numerous activities available in the area throughout the course of a year.

Three Lakes kicked off 2012 with the Lions Club’s 60th annual Ice Fishing Derby in February, which drew a large number of contestants of all ages.

Several fish ranging from panfish to northern pike were registered and prizes were awarded. This event will be held again Feb. 23.

Also in February, the chamber held the Vintage Oval Snowmobile races on Spirit Lake. Due to poor ice conditions in March, the annual Vintage Enduro races were canceled.

Both events are slated for 2013, with the Oval Races set for Feb. 2 and the Enduro races set for March 9.

Several recurring events take place from June through August to provide entertainment, including Aqua Devils waterski shows Wednesdays and Saturdays; Concerts in the Park at Cy Williams Park; and the Firemen’s Flea Market at Cy Williams Park Wednesdays.

The Petroleum Museum held its annual car show in June, showcasing 110 vehicles from the early 1900s to modern-day models. Food and beverages were available, along with live entertainment. The event is slated for June 15 this year.

Summer events continued in July with the annual Three Lakes Fire Department Radar Run Shootout & Fly-In.

This event draws drag boats from New York and Canada reaching top speeds of 150 miles per hour in a 1,000-foot radar run from a standing start.

The Shootout also features an airport fly-in of various aircraft plus snowmobiles pulling barefoot water skiers. The 2013 event will be held June 21-22.

Continuing into July, the Three Lakes chamber held its inaugural Northwoods Heritage Fest, which paid tribute to some of the various North Woods cultures and traditions.

The event featured an opening flag ceremony and national anthems from featured countries. Ethnic food, beer, wine, music entertainment and history displays were featured.
