Big Sand Lake owned by people of Wisconsin PDF Print E-mail

Letter to the Editor:

I have been hearing several comments about the fact that the petition by the Big Sand Lake Association Board for a lake district was not approved, but no official statement from the board, that I know of, has been issued.

I have been a member of the lake association since it was formed in 1993 and have served on the board. I may still be considered a board member but have never been notified if not.

One of the biggest failures of any organization, whether it’s an organization, board, company, volunteer group, etc., is the failure to communicate actions and decisions to its members. This is the current situation with the board’s decision to petition and timing of such for the lake district, which I did not support. I have, however, always supported their requests for monetary donations for the association’s portion of the Eurasian milfoil control.

The reason I do not support a lake district is that it provides for taxation of only lakeshore owners to manage the lake. The lake is owned by the people of Wisconsin and managed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR). As an association, we tried but could never afford the financial means to control the milfoil until the state provided grant money.

The state also owns the public boat landing which creates the threat of possible year-round contamination of the lake. Perhaps it is time for an added fee on fishing licenses and/or boat registrations, for boat inspections, cleaning stations and lake management.

The milfoil elimination process is now in a maintenance mode and I will continue to support it.

Any other major invasion of a different aquatic invasive species (AIS) would, and should, include support from the state DNR.
