| Against ATVs in Three Lakes |

Letter to the Editor: I have been a summer resident of Three Lakes for over 30 years, and a frequent visitor before then. From the beginning, I was attracted to the area by its beauty and tranquility, so different from the uproar of the city where I live. Therefore, I’ve been sickened and disgusted to find that a small, well-organized group is pushing for an ordinance to allow ATV vehicles to use town roads. I think it is a grave mistake to rush this decision through without input from summer visitors who contribute much to the town’s taxes, institutions and businesses.
These vehicles are noisy and destructive to the environment. Why would the town want to give them free reign? And if it does, how will future potential investors react when considering whether to invest here? I hope the commission will vote “no” on this ordinance. Sincerely, Lawrence E. 1 Noise level is measured on level ground at constant throttle. Hills will cause much more noise.
2. Doors and Windows are closed in winter.
3. Google ATV issues and you find many National Forest list off trail issues. I expect this is from non-local riders going off trails.
4. I can't recall seeing an ATV after a weekend not being covered in mud.
5. All sports should be considered, but on all town roads?
from atvsafety.gov: ATVs should not be driven on paved roads. ATVs on paved roads are at risk of being hit by cars and other vehicles. While passenger vehicles contain safety features designed to protect occupants from collisions, ATVs do not. If struck by other vehicles, ATV riders can be killed or severely injured.
In addition, most ATVs have low pressure tires and a solid rear axle, where both wheels turn at the same speed. When making a turn, the ATV's inside rear wheel is intended to skid because its path length is less than the path length of the outside wheel. ATVs on paved surfaces have much better traction, which prevents the necessary skidding. This can make turning an ATV on paved surfaces unpredictable and unstable.
