| Where’s the evidence of ore? |

Dear Editor: In light of your coverage and apparent support for Sen. Tom Tiffany and the mining bill, I have one very simple, concise comment /question. Just where is the evidence of an ore body at the Penokee Range? For well over a year, I have asked this question of Mr. Tiffany and many other supporters of this bill. I have received no satisfactory answer. Even more troubling to me is the fact that no press in this region has questioned the existence of a viable ore body at Penokee. The Marsden Report is certainly not convincing. The very fact that U.S. Steel did not pursue a mine in all the decades they controlled the area is further suspect. The scam is apparent. The perpetrators are, however, less distinct from the accomplices and the victims. Joe Hovel Conover |

There is a road outside of Mellen that goes up a hill. At the top of the hill there is a communications tower (made of steel). You will have to forgive me, but I cannot remember the name of the road. As I frequent Ashland during the summer, I have done this myself after hearing about it.
As you begin to go up the hill, take a look at your compass in your vehicle, or better yet, use a hand held compass.
You will likely notice that the compass will "dance". You will not have a true bearing of North. The reason for this, is because of the magnetic field being produced by the iron in the ground. In that particular location, the magnetic field is stronger than the earth's magnetic field which causes this to happen.
So to answer your question, take a little drive and see what happens. Don't forget that for over 80 years that ground produced iron in the underground mines. The same iron that built this country.
At the end of your letter you stated:
“The scam is apparent.”
You are correct and I have to admit, you almost pulled it off.
But all of a sudden, I recalled seeing your name listed above Susan’s on the Board of Directors for Northwood Alliance when I was putting her response together.
So, my main response to Susan in the letter below is my response to you, as well.
