Governor signs mining bill; GOP claims jobs on horizon

RHINELANDER — Gov. Scott Walker signed Senate Bill 1 into law Monday, legislation which streamlines the permitting process for mining in Wisconsin and could lead to a future iron ore mine in Ashland and Iron counties.

Along with signing the bill at Oldenburg Group Inc., in Rhinelander, Walker predicted the legislation will allow safe mining and boost the economy of northern Wisconsin.

“Wisconsin’s seal and the state flag both depict mining in our great state,” said Walker. “In light of our mining tradition, I’m thrilled to sign legislation into law protecting environmental safeguards, while providing certainty to the mine permitting process.”
