Fishing improving for panfish anglers

By George Langley

Some anglers and guides are starting to question whether or not there will be open water for the game fish opener May 4.

There is still some snow and slush on most lakes, with up to 32 inches of ice underneath and no significant warm-up in the long-term forecast. What a difference from last year when the ice was gone by the end of March!

Perch fishing has been good area wide. These fish will be very active over the next few weeks leading up to the spawn. Ice anglers have reported good perch action on many area lakes using small minnows, wigglers and waxies. Look for these fish to be hanging on the mud
