Vilas septic compliance at 97%; remaining mailed fine of $263

Homeowners in Vilas County who ignored or forgot about a notice from the Zoning Department to have their on-site septic systems pumped or inspected — or failed to provide documentation of pumping or inspection — are being mailed citations filed in county circuit court that carry a penalty of $263.50.

“We’re sending out about 20 citations a week out of 200 that have not complied with our inspection ordinance,” said county Zoning Administrator Dawn Schmidt. “I feel we have excellent compliance, roughly 97%, considering the 7,200 notices we send each year for the required three-year inspection according to state law.”
