River fishing best on opening weekend

What a year so far. None of us have any idea whether the ice is going to be out by this weekend at the time of this writing.

You will not see any more ice fishermen on the ice at this point, as it has gotten quite sloppy and untrustworthy. Only the “nuts” go out at this time. While we have 20-plus inches on some lakes, much of it is quite honeycombed on the top. You will notice it getting darker and darker and some of the ice has gone away from the shorelines. It can go fast, as we found out last year.

What anglers would really like to see
