|Vilas awards nearly $500,000 in timber sale bids over 2 years|
By Ken Anderson
Close to a half million dollars in timber sales were awarded to high bidders when the Vilas County Forestry, Recreation and Land Committee met last week to open spring timber sale bids from loggers.
While some timber tracts generated only one bid, competition from other sale sites generated some close bids. When bids on all 14 tracts were completed, the county forest is expected to provide $469,287.90 in revenue over the next two years. This is looked on as minimum revenue since actual harvest volumes based on past experience are usually more than first estimated. Aspen is the dominate species in the sale totaling 7,910 tons, followed by mixed hardwoods at 3,350 tons. Red pine pulp will be at 2,070 tons, white pine at 1,820 tons and oak at 1,650 tons. Balsam fir is estimated at 745 tons, jack pine at 690 tons,
