‘Taking’ shows no vision for Wisconsin waters PDF Print E-mail

Letter to the Editor:

To Sen. Tom Tiffany and Rep. Rob Swearingen:

Recently, the Joint Finance Committee passed Motion 375, which would add to the biannual budget wording that impacts the right of Wisconsin citizens to challenge high-capacity well permits, whether the challenges currently exist or are future challenges.

Not only is this a taking of the right of Wisconsin citizens, but also does not recognize that over-pumping of any aquifer will impact both private and public drinking water wells and diminish or stem waters that recharge Wisconsin’s lakes.

This action does not support the Public Trust Doctrine, that sacred Wisconsin policy that states all waters, ground or surface, are public and shall remain so in perpetuity. The budget is also an odd place to bury the taking of a right of citizens.

Please take action to eliminate this “taking.” It is ill conceived and shows no regard or long-term vision for waters of Wisconsin that quench our citizens’ thirst and support that vast sector of our economy that is dependent upon our surface waters.

Best regards,

Sandy Gillum
