NOKOMIS — A 42-year-old Harshaw man was killed Thursday afternoon on Highway 51 after his vehicle crossed the centerline and collided with a semitrailer, police said.
The Oneida County Sheriff’s Department said the accident took the life of Jason P. Smoker, who was travelinig northbound on Highway 51 about three miles north of Highway 8 in the town of Nokomis.
Police said the accident occurred about 2:02 p.m., just 17 minutes aftere the sheriff’s department received a 911 call reporting reckless driving of a northbound vehicle. In their press statement, police did not confirm a positive identity on the first vechicle that
was being driven in a reckless manner.
Police said the initial investigation indicated that the northbound automobile crossed over the center line and struck the trailer of a southbound semi. The driver and single occupant of the automobile died from injuries sustained in the June 6 crash.
A press release from the sheriff’s department did not mention whether the truck driver was injuried in the incident.
The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Wisconsin State Patrol, Nokomis Fire Department and First Responders, Tomahawk Fire Department and Ambulance, Oneida County Highway and Emergency Medical Service, and the Oneida County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office and Oneida County Medical Examiner’s Office are continuing their investigation into the events surrounding the death.
