“I have to concentrate to make myself say ‘Yes’ instead of ‘Ja’ (yah), ” said Jan Boelte, referring to a remnant of her Swedish heritage, which peppers her speech.

“My grandparents came to this country on a herring keg,” she joked.

“Actually, my grandfather came alone to get work as a tailor. My grandmother stayed behind in Sweden to provide for their five children.

“They had a sixth child after they were reunited in America. When he established his business and got a house, grandmother brought the family through Ellis Island and joined him in Madison,”
