Walter E. Hausaman of Phelps, formerly of Morton Grove, Ill., went home to his Savior Jesus Christ on June 19, 2013.
Born Sept. 10, 1919, in Chicago, Ill., he passed away at St. Joseph Hospital in Marshfield, Wis., after a fall.
Preceded in death by his parents, Emil and Marie Hausaman; and sister and brother-in-law, Emily and Harold Bernsten.Survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Angeline; cherished daughters, Donna (Gil) DiIorio and Pat (Dave) Vargas.
Very special to him were his grandchildren, Christopher (Cindi) DiIorio, Casey (Tosha) DiIorio, Adrianne (Tim) Barkhurst, Natalie (Dan) Romeo and Katie Vargas; great-grandchildren, Jessalin Long, Vincent, Alyssa and Izzy DiIorio, Abigail and Gabriel Barkhurst and Luke Romeo; nephews, Steve (Trudy) Bernsten, M.D., and Scott (Debbie) Bernsten.
Walter served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a P.O. 1st Class for three years.
He earned a Bachelors of Science in electrical engineering, owned and operated appliance/electronics stores in Chicago and later owned Shotts Fine Foods, also in Chicago.
He retired from Ohmite Manufacturing in Skokie, Ill., in 1978, and then moved to Phelps, on Kildare Lake.
He served as a volunteer for 12 years at nutrition sites and served two terms as director on the Eagle River Hospital Board.
Walter was Past Commander and Life Member of the VFW Post 3854, a Life Member of the Eagle River VFW Post 8637 and a member of the VFW Honor Guard for more than 20 years.
He was also past Commander and Life Member of the American Legion Post 464 in Land O’ Lakes.
He was a past Chairman of Northern Wisconsin Retirees, past president of Land O’ Lakes Fish and Game Club for five years and a DNR instructor for boat, gun and snowmobile safety classes.
Walter was a Eucharistic Minister at St. Albert’s Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was founder and president of the Kildare Lake Association and he was an avid fisherman and RV traveler.
A memorial service was held June 24, 2013, at St. Albert’s Catholic Church in Land O’ Lakes, with Mass of the Resurrection. Burial followed in Oak Hill Cemetery in Land O’ Lakes.
