Mathew ‘Chuck’ Porten PDF Print E-mail

Mathew “Chuck” Porten, of Eagle River died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013, at Aspirus Comfort Care & Hospice in Wausau. He was 88.

Mr. Porten was born Feb. 4, 1925, in Rhinelander, the son of Mathew and Gladyce (née Jansen) Porten.

He was a graduate of Rhinelander High School with the class of 1943.

Mr. Porten served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II from 1943-’45 having been stationed in the South Pacific.

He married Jean Follstad Sept. 9, 1950, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Elcho.

After his service, he worked at Nash Motors in Milwaukee for several years.

For most of his life he was a home delivery milkman, beginning in Milwaukee then moving to Pelican Lake in 1966 where he purchased a milk delivery business which he operated as Porten Dairy Distributors until his retirement in 1983.

He then became a representative for Catholic Knights Insurance and The Principal Financial Co.

In 1994 Mr. Porten was ordained a deacon in the Catholic church for the Diocese of Superior.

He was a member of St. John Catholic Church in Pelican Lake for most of his life and served as a deacon at the church for 14 years.

In retirement he worked as a food demonstrator at grocery stores in Antigo and Trig’s in Rhinelander.

Mr. Porten was a member of the MacDonald-O’Neil Knights of Columbus Council, the Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts, all in Rhinelander.

He was a charter member of the Rhinelander Chapter of Ducks Unlimited.

His interests included genealogy, storytelling with family and friends and sunsets on Pelican Lake.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, who raised him, Isadore and Hannah Jansen; his parents; and one brother, John.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Bonny (Larry Duder) of Hudson, and Jenny (Jon) Moilanen of Leavenworth, Kan.; four sons, Joseph (Gretchen) of Sturgeon Bay, John (Stacie) of Sheboygan, Robert (Missy) of Utica, N.Y., and David (Bev) of Rhinelander; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was held Aug. 17 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Elcho with the Rev. David Zimmerman officiating.

Burial was held in Holy Family Catholic Cemetery.
