Overtime costs climb in sheriff’s department

High overtime costs continue to effect the Vilas County Sheriff’s Department budget and particularly for jail operations, according to Sheriff Joe Fath in a report to the county Law Enforcement Committee last week.

With a finance report showing that the overtime line is $140,667 over budget, Fath declared last week, “The only overtime being used is for emergencies.”

The 2012 overtime budget was $234,000, but was cut to $23,000 for this year. Fath said emergency transports, drug investigations and jail coverage drove the overtime expenditures up in 2013. Jail clerks were cut from three employees to two and jail staff moved to other positions in the county leaving staff shortages.
