Phelps chamber sought bids for annual meeting PDF Print E-mail

Letter to the Editor:

In response to the Judy Wiita letter in the Vilas County News-Review Nov. 20 titled,  “Questions location of chamber dinner.”

Dear Judy Wiita,

Thank you for your Letter to the Editor voicing your concerns in regards to the Phelps Chamber of Commerce’s annual meeting/dinner. We welcome any input from our business members and the general public.

The Phelps Chamber of Commerce, like many other area chambers, allows businesses from Phelps as well as businesses from other communities to join our organization. In fact, we have many members from outside of Phelps. This gives businesses the ability to reach out and market themselves in a larger area.

We feel it is extremely important for the businesses of Phelps and the neighboring communities to work together in an effort to market this area of the North Woods as a whole. Each community has something unique to offer and by marketing together, we will draw more business to the entire North Woods area.

To more thoroughly answer your question, let us explain the details of the process we went through to select a location to hold our annual meeting.

We sent a request out for bids to all restaurants and bars that are members of the Phelps chamber and no formal bids were received by the deadline. We had to make a decision as to where we would hold the meeting and we were left with a limited time frame until our annual meeting date.

Since we had already offered a bidding process to all of our members and no one had bid, we then specifically solicited chamber businesses that had previously shown an interest from the first bidding process, but had not submitted an actual bid.

One business submitted a bid and then withdrew, and two others submitted bids for consideration. The Phelps chamber board of directors then held a blind vote based on the proposed menus and price. Gateway Lodge won in a close vote.

The dinner was great and the evening was wonderful. Please feel free to contact us with questions or concerns at (715) 545-3800 or by email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. . We look forward to hearing from you.
