Questions state spending more dollars on walleyes PDF Print E-mail

Dear Editor:

Let’s see if I have this straight. Our governor has authorized our Department of Natural Resources (DNR) secretary to spend $500,000 in each of the next two years to buy walleyes from private municipal and tribal hatcheries to plant in our lakes.

The funding for this year was $870,000 and $1.3 million for next year’s operating costs.

DNR Secretary Cathy Stepp says, “This is great news for walleye anglers and the businesses that depend on them.”

OK, now comes the problem. What I?see is that when these walleyes reach eating size, what’s to keep our Native American tribes from raising the harvest number and taking more walleyes from these lakes?

Are we just wasting our state dollars on a wild goose chase? And who will really benefit from these dollars?

I guess?I really don’t understand. Can someone please explain how this will work?
