Jim Gottsacker, a resident of Eagle River since 2002 and formerly of Watersmeet, Mich., died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013, in Woodruff. He was 80.
Mr. Gottsacker was born April 11, 1933, in Sheboygan to Roman and Marion Gottsacker.
He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, and received his bachelor of science degree from Iowa State University in forestry and a master of science degree from Syracuse University in forest economics.He married Kathleen Bales Sept. 3, 1960, in West Bend, and worked for the U.S. Forest Service for 26 years from 1962 to 1988.
Mr. Gottsacker was also an assessor in Watersmeet from 1988 to 2003. He was a member of the Lions Club International.
His interests included hiking, biking, cross-country skiing and woodworking.
He was an active member of St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church, the finance council and volunteered at St. Peter’s Thrift Store and Annex.
Mr. Gottsacker was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Romaine Draughon.
Survivors include his wife; five sons, Keven (Jodi) of Eagle River, James (Shelly) of Bloomington, Ill., Joel (Tom McCarthy) of Farmington Hill, Mich., Neal (Patricia) of Cedarburg, and Bill (Joan) of Cincinnati, Ohio; two sisters, Joan and Sr. Edith, both of Eagle River; and 10 grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Nov. 30 at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church in Eagle River.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. Peter’s Church or to Seasons of Life in Woodruff are appreciated.
