Walleyes still hitting; crappie action starting

Anglers are experiencing some pretty good January fishing, as the walleyes and northerns are still providing good action. In addition, although anglers might hit some slush pockets on the ice, it is not as bad as last year at this time. Ice thickness is really getting up there, with 15 to 20 inches being common. Ice roads are plowed out on many lakes.

Snow conditions are perfect for the cross-country skiers and showshoe enthusiasts. We’ve had many 2-inch snows lately that have kept the snow fresh. What this all feels like is a normal winter here in the North.

Walleye fishing has been consistently good for the last several weeks. This is unusual for this time of year,
