|Bitter cold returns; area schools closed|

Frigid cold air returned to the North Woods Sunday night through Tuesday, with the low temperature at minus 24 degrees in Eagle River Tuesday morning and wind chill factors between 30 and 40 degrees below zero.
Due to the cold weather and dangerous conditions, Northland Pines and Phelps schools were closed Monday and Tuesday, and Three Lakes was closed Tuesday.
It’s the second cold blast of the month as a so-called polar vortex plunged south into the Midwest Jan. 5-7, causing the temperature to drop to 29 degrees below zero Jan. 7.The cold month has been good for winter recreation,
