Luke J. Buettell, 45, of Flagstaff, Ariz., formerly of St. Germain, Wis., passed away on Feb. 23, 2014, in Arizona, after a courageous battle with Multiple Sclerosis, surrounded by his family.

Family and friends gathered for memorial services March 1, 2014, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, Dubuque, Iowa, with the Rev. Jerry Blake officiating. A flag presentation was accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League.

Luke was born on March 18, 1968, in Dubuque,  the son of Stephen and Sharon (Maury) Buettell.

After high school he joined the U.S. Navy and served from 1987 to 1991.

He married Ann Schmit on March 19, 1993.

He enjoyed fishing and was an avid Minnesota Vikings Fan.

He was a loving husband and father of three children who were everything to him.

He is survived by his wife, Ann; three children, Dennis, Danielle and Dianna, all of Flagstaff, Ariz.; his mother, Sharon Buettell; siblings, Chris (Paul) Schroeder of Omaha, Neb., Debbie (Barry) Nathanson of Framingham, Ma., Steve Buettell, Doug Buettell, both of Dubuque; his mother- and father-in-law, Donald and Betty Schmit of Dubuque; brothers and sisters-in-law, Nancy (Walter) Meinholz, Deforest, Wis., Randy Schmit of Dallas, Texas, Mary Serva of Wakefield, Mich., Sue (Joe) Hyatt of Madison, Wis., Ron Schmit of Madison, Jean (Butch) Harshman of New Auburn, Wis., Don Schmit of Cedar Rapids, Brian (Josi) Schmit of Cedar Rapids, Steve (Tammy) Schmit of Guttenberg, Iowa, Jeff (Mary) Schmit of Madison, Wis., Joe Schmit, Larry Schmit and Theresa Budde, all of Dubuque; many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his father, Steve.

The family requests no flowers. A Luke J. Buettell memorial fund has been established.
