Jim was born to Bernard and Hilda Fischer on Feb. 21, 1938, in Green Bay.
He worked many years for Bark River Culvert and Equipment Co. and retired after 25 years as Vilas County Highway Commissioner.Jim married Carol Hannon in 1960, and she preceded him in death in 1977.
In 1980, he married Sue Burt. They enjoyed many years together, entertaining family and friends.
Jim loved life and laughter, and even in the hardest of times lightened many a load. He was famous for his humor, as attested by family, friends and co-workers.
His grandchildren enjoyed time with Grandpa and his constant teasing.
Jim always loved his jobs and considered his co-workers his friends.
Jim is survived by his wife, Sue; and their five children, David Fischer of Rhinelander, Patrick (Cindy) Fischer and grandson, Nathan, of Green Bay, Shelly Fischer of Raleigh, N.C., Melissa (Tim) Tanke and grandsons, Joseph and Benjamin, of Green Bay, Amanda (Paul) Bushmaker and grandsons, Simon, Max and granddaughter, Ava, of Plover.
He also is survived by his brother, Eugene (Kathleen) Fischer; sister-in-law, Marilyn Fischer; mother-in-law, Marvalene Burt; brother-in-law, Terry (Dana) Burt; sister-in-law, Kathy (Steve) Ryan; brothers-in-law, Jim and Richard Hannon; sister-in-law, Becky (Jim) Spring; and 15 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jerry Fischer; sisters-in-law, Ann and Patricia Fischer; brother-in-law, Tom Crooks; father- and mother-in-law, Elmer and Millie Hannon; father-in-law, Floyd Burt; and nephew, Tom Lamal.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 20, 2014, at Gaffney-Busha Funeral Home in Eagle River. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 19, 2014, and 1 p.m. on Thursday prior to the service at Gaffney-Busha Funeral Home.
A memorial will be established in Jim’s name.
