LdF tribe declares 273 northern lakes for spring spearing

State eyeing options
to reduced bag limits

The Lac du Flambeau Band, historically one of the most active and proficient spearers of the six Chippewa bands in the state, told the Voigt Inter-Tribal Task Force last week that the tribe has increased the number of lakes to be speared this year to 273 — including 21 in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

According to Brandon Thoms, director of public relations for the Lac du Flambeau Band, the tribe has declared a total of 27,868 walleye and 886 muskie. The maximum safe walleye harvest for all six Chippewa tribes is calculated at 81,011, with the tribes declaring 63,488.
