By Gary Ridderbusch
Richter was considered an Eagle River pioneer by many, growing up on the family homestead farm on Croker Road and attending the Croker School.
She was the Vilas County deputy register of deeds for nine years. She then ran for and won the office of register of deeds and held that position for 24 years. She retired Jan. 3, 1999, after serving the county for 33 years.Richter hired Joan Hansen, the current register of deeds, in 1997.
“There was a lot that I had to learn, but she was a very good teacher and instilled a strong work ethic in the office,” said Hansen. “She taught me the importance of the office for keeping public records and the importance of details so people could find what they were looking for.”
The youngest of five children, Richter graduated from Eagle River High School as class salutatorian. Soon after graduation, she met Ed Richter. They were married June 16, 1951.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years; one son, Guy (Terry) of Rye, Colo.; one daughter, Gail (Tom) Kuklinski of Hayward; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and one sister, Margery Payne-Schlinder.
