Supports a ban on plastic bags PDF Print E-mail

Dear Editor:

I say, let’s hear it for Bill Henderson! His letter about banning the use of plastic bags in Eagle River stores should be a wake-up call for well-meaning readers who think that individuals can do nothing to solve important problems.

Why stop using plastic bags? Let me count several reasons:

  • Plastic bags are not biodegradable. They clog waterways, spoil the landscape and end in landfills where they’re reduced to smaller particles that pollute soil and water.
  • Plastic bags pose a serious danger to birds and marine mammals that often mistake them for food and ingest them.

Cities such as San Francisco and Santa Fe have banned the use of plastic bags. Let’s put Eagle River on the enlightened list. For more information, check, “Environmental Issues.”
