Irma B. Sherwood, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away May 2, 2014, at North Ridge Assisted Living Center while with her family and in the care of Heartland Hospice.
Irma was born in Evanston, Ill., on Aug. 2, 1924, to Fred and Minnie (Lochman) Breitzmann.
Irma and her husband, Eben Sherwood, lived in Evanston until their retirement in 1975, when they moved to the St. Germain area to live in what they called “God’s country.”Irma was an excellent athlete in her youth, earning Chicago area trophies in speed skating, and was invited to try out for the All American Woman’s Baseball League. Her athleticism continued into her 70’s, bowling in a local league.
Irma chose to live her life in devotion to her family as wife, mother, and homemaker while working as a school crossing guard. Her second career as a waitress at Blink Bonnie in St. Germain lasted more than 16 years.
Throughout her life Irma enjoyed serving the community and was especially active in the St. Germain Women’s Service Club. She was proud of the activities the club took on, especially the club’s college scholarship program.
She was extremely proud of her husband and their marriage of 64 years, and of her daughters and granddaughters and their accomplishments.
Her husband, Eben, her parents, one sister, and two brothers preceded Irma in death.
She is survived by daughters, Susan Sherwood (Bruce Weigel) and Holly Rasmussen (Chuck); and granddaughters, Katie Wilkes (Alex) and Courtney Rasmussen (Matt Zimmer); and great grandson, Chase Wilkes.
A memorial service will be held at the Community United Church of Christ in St. Germain at 1 p.m., on Friday May 9, 2014.
