Jo Ann C. Birkeness of Eagle River died Saturday, May 24, 2014, at Friendly Village Nursing Home in Rhinelander. She was 83.

Mrs. Birkeness was born March 24, 1931, in Green Bay, the daughter of Fred and Agnes (née Rasmussen) Krenzien. She was raised and attended schools in Green Bay.

She was married to David Birkeness and together they owned and operated the Mud Creek Saloon in Eagle River. She also was employed as a dietitian at the Eagle River Nursing Home.

Mrs. Birkeness was an avid Green Bay Packers fan, a charter member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Eagle River and a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 2005; one daughter, Pammy; and one son, Michael.

She is survived by one brother, Lawrence Krenzien of Las Vegas, Nev., and one sister, Beverly LeRoy of Florida.

A memorial service will be  held Wednesday, May 28, at 10:30 a.m. at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.
