Eagle girls advance to Sectional final with 3-1 victory over West Salem PDF Print E-mail

The Northland Pines girls soccer team defeated West Salem 3-1 in the WIAA Division 3 Sectional semi final at West Salem Thursday evening.

The Eagles will now face Ashland this Saturday, June 14, at 1 p.m. in the Sectional final at Chippewa Falls. The winner will advance to the State Girls Soccer Tournament in Milwaukee next weekend.

Against top-seeded West Salem, the second-seeded Eagles fell behind early as the Panthers

scored on a high shot over Eagles goalie Allyson Sima.

 

But Pines tied the game at 1-1 midway through the first half on a shot in front of the net by Carly Ridderbusch. The half ended in a 1-1 tie.

With about 10 minutes remaining in the game, Tess Osiecki found a loose ball in front of the net and slipped in a short shot to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.

A  minute later, Lauren Lenz scored for Pines during a scramble in front of the Panthers’ net to give the Eagles a two-goal lead. West Salem only had one more rush on their net in the final nine minutes.

The Eagles finished in second place in the Great Northern Conference with a 9-2-1 record and are 14-6-1 overall heading into Saturday’s game against Ashland, the top seed in the other Sectional bracket.
