By Gary Ridderbusch

Journeys Marathon is set for Saturday, May 14, in Eagle River and community help is needed to make the 15th anniversary event the best one ever, according to Kim Emerson, events coordinator for the Eagle River Area Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center.

Volunteers are needed both on Friday, May 13, and Saturday, May 14, according to Emerson.

“Six volunteers are needed to help set up in Riverview Park at 8 a.m. Friday and three more volunteers are needed to help with registration set up at 3 p.m. Friday at Northland Pines High

School,” said Emerson.

On Saturday, May 14, the chamber needs six to eight volunteers who could help set up at Riverview Park at 8 a.m. and two to three people to help take items from the high school to the chamber office at 7:30 a.m.

“We also need a race spotter to report the lead runners, first, second and third, in each race before they cross the bridge to the finish line,” said Emerson. She said the person woul have to be at the park from about 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Three to four people also are needed to ride the full marathon on bicycle and six to eight people are needed to ride the half marathon course. Bicyclists monitor runners while they are on the course. They can ride the bus to the starting lines, leaving from the high school at 6:45 a.m. for the full marathon and 8:30 a.m. for the half marathon.

In addition, two people are needed to help with 5-K registration in the park from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. The chamber also needs a few people at the park at 2 p.m. Saturday to help with cleanup.

“If you are interested in volunteering, meeting new people and having a great time working at Journeys Marathon, give me a call at (715) 479-6400,” said Emerson. “It’s the volunteers who really make Journeys Marathon a great time for everyone.”

Emerson said that more than 700 runners from 15 different states have registered for Journeys Marathon.

“We are on target to beat last year’s record number of 1,027 runners,” said Emerson. “Our goal this year is 1,050 runners.”
