A historic event will take place at noon in Eagle River Saturday, May 28. That’s when Oldenburg Sports Park, located at 5625 Highway G, will be dedicated.
The park is a collaborative effort between Vilas County and community-based sports clubs. The new Vilas County park was made possible by a 2009 contribution of $325,000 from Wayne Oldenburg, owner of Oldenburg Group.
The recreation facility is home to Headwaters Youth Soccer Association (HYSA), United Northwoods Soccer (UNS) and soon the Eagle River area youth baseball and adult softball programs. Oldenburg also committed another $10,000 for dugouts for the facility.
The park is currently leased by HYSA from the county for $1 per year. Through the middle of July, it is being used and maintained by UNS. UNS attracts players from across the county. Towns represented in the program are Eagle River, Phelps, Three Lakes, St. Germain, Conover, Land O’ Lakes, Lac du Flambeau, Arbor Vitae and Lake Tomahawk. The HYSA fall recreation program also includes players from Sugar Camp and the game schedule includes teams for the Minocqua/Arbor Vitae/Woodruff area club. The site will be host to a late-July Challenger Sport
