Threshold of a new year

By Mary Friedel-Hunt

We stand at the threshold of another year. None of us knows what lies beyond that doorway. We hope the year brings with it peace, health, prosperity and more, but we are wise enough and have lived long enough to know that the year will be filled with a mix of events and experiences including joy, confusion, life, death, excitement, poverty, wars somewhere, peace, strife, sadness, grief, laughter and more. Maybe someone reading this column will cross death’s threshold this year. New babies will be born. Soldiers will come home from wars and many won’t. Life is a series of ups and downs. We know that.
The unknown can be threatening to most. We have little to no control over much of what happens, but we do have the ability to take charge of our own lives and attitudes. We can make certain that our intentions are pure, that we do all we can to continue to grow into people of loving-kindness and that we do our best each day to be people of integrity. That we can control.
