The noon whistle
By Mary Freidel-Hunt

AS I DROVE home from a nearby town today, the noon whistle blew. No one stopped. There was no visible acknowledgement. It made me wonder what would happen many years ago when the noon whistle blew. So I ventured into the world of the Internet and found out that the whistle is usually found in factory and mill towns. I always thought it existed to let the factory workers know that it was time to break for lunch.
