We never forget
By Mary Friedel-Hunt

As a kid, Memorial Day never meant more to me than a day off from school or a long weekend with perhaps a parade or picnic. I never knew anyone in the military when I was growing up. My relatives who had died were all buried out of state so we never went to cemeteries. Though I do remember my mom talking about Decoration Day (the original name for this holiday), even when my parents died they were buried far away

I wonder if anyone remembers standing on the bridge that connected the main part of Eagle River with the northside and watching as someone from a small plane attempted to drop a wreath on a cross that floated in the river. The HS band always played on Decoration Day. This would have been in the late 30s or 40s.
