A hierarchy of needs
By Mary Friedel-Hunt

I cut the fern down in early July because it dried up and died in spite of my watering it twice a day. The high temperatures were just too much for it. My hydrangea did not produce its normally gigantic flowers and the hibiscus struggled to bloom and then wilted as the sun beat down on it in the 100-plus degree temperatures early this month. Even my incredible maple tree took a beating. And when we finally got a storm in late July, the lightning struck and split one of the two trees in my backyard and the wind took the top of the other one, leaving my backyard empty of trees.
