Hockey hall to induct three Sept. 6

At its annual meeting in Stevens Point, the board of directors of the Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame named its inductees for 2014.

Selected for induction to the Hall Sept. 6 in Eagle River are Gary Kuklinski and Jeff Kuklinski of Mosinee and Tom Kuklinski of Hayward.

In partnership with the Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame and at the same ceremony, the Wisconsin High School Hockey Coaches Association will induct Jerry Tighe of Fond du Lac into the Wisconsin High School Hockey Coaches Hall of Fame.

YMCA plans golf scramble

The YMCA of the Northwoods will sponsor its 14th annual golf scramble Friday, July 18, at Pinewood Country Club in Harshaw.

Registration is now open and costs $75 per person if signed-up by July 11. The cost is $85 after that date.

Check-in will take place at 8 a.m.

Cage fights
The Northwoods Combat Challenge took place at the AMSOIL World Championship Derby Track July 5. The event featured fighters from Wisconsin pitted against fighters from Michigan. Matches included a variety of fighting styles. Event to benefit
Wellness Center

The Pines Community Wellness Center will hold its first major fundraiser, the Moonlight Run (formerly the Moonshine Run) this Saturday, July 12, at 10 p.m. in downtown Eagle River near the depot.

Northland Pines School District officials said they hope to make the run an annual fundraising event for the wellness center, which the district took over center operations from the YMCA in 2013.

The event will be a 5-kilometer (5K) run along with a children’s 1-kilometer (1K) race. Activities for the entire family will begin at 7 p.m. with food, games, music and a 50-foot inflatable obstacle course.

Freedom 5K Fun Run draws 260 participants
Devin Sauvola (left) of Eagle River won the male division of the Freedom 5K Fun Run in St. Germain June 29 with a time of 16:37. Dana Steffen of Greenfield took top honors for the ladies with a time of 19:15.

For the 10th year in a row, St. Germain’s Independence Day celebration kicked off with the Freedom 5K Fun Run Sunday, June 29, drawing 260 participants.

The top male finisher was Devin Sauvola of Eagle River, who finished in 16 minutes, 37 seconds. The first female across the finish line was Dana Steffen of Greenfield in 19:15.

Trophies were awarded to the top overall male and female finishers, with medals going to the top three in each of eight age categories.

Big fan turnout witnesses 82 cars at Eagle River Speedway special

A large turnout of fans saw 82 cars take on the challenging one-third-mile tri-oval at Eagle River Speedway for last Friday’s Fourth of July Fireworks Special.

The special included the Auto Value WISSOTA Midwest Modified Special, the Badger Midget Auto Racing Association Micro Sprint 600 Special and Harry’s Fireworks show during intermission.

The track also made up three feature races that were rained out the previous Friday night.

Seven from Pines receive GNC honors in girls soccer

Seven players from the Northland Pines girls soccer team re­ceived all-con­ference recognition from the Great Northern Conference (GNC) for the 2014 season.

Pines seniors Lauren Lenz and Kailyn Hogenmiller received first-team all-conference honors. Lenz was a unanimous selection.

Lenz played midfield and forward for the Eagles, scoring 20 goals and adding 11 assists for 51 points.

Rain ends racing early in Eagle River; speedway to host Fourth of July special

With the previous Friday night’s races being cancelled due to rain, and rain moving in this past Friday night, racers and track officials at Eagle River Speedway did all they could to get as many races in before the rain came.

All of the heat races were ran and three of the six feature races were finished before the clouds opened up.
