Grasse wins Midwest Modified feature

Jerry Grasse of Phelps won an action-packed Midwest Modified feature race last Friday night at Eagle River Speedway.

Shortly after Grasse held off Jeff Klopstein and Jesse Aho to win the feature, Bob Kleinschmidt and Dan Mel­ton collided near the flag pole.

Kleinschmidt’s car rolled three times and ended up resting on its roof. After the Eagle River Service Center tow truck pulled Kleinschmidt’s car over, the racer of three decades came out of the car without serious in­jury.

Fall sports meeting planned at Pines High

Athletes in grades nine through 12 planning to participate in a fall sport at Northland Pines High School should attend the fall sports meeting at the school with a parent or guardian, Monday, Aug. 4.

Beginning at 6 p.m. in the high school commons, all WIAA physical or alternate year cards, signed co-curricular codes, emergency medical forms and payment of the $25 activity fee may be completed.

Before an athlete is allowed to practice, all forms must be on file

Men’s softball tourney slated in Sugar Camp

The Sugar Camp Youth Club 40th annual Men’s Slow-Pitch Tournament will take place from Friday to Sunday, Aug. 1-3. The championship game is slated for Sunday at 5 p.m.

This is a 24-team double elimination tournament with many local teams as well as teams from around Wisconsin, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and some coming from as far as Illinois to participate.

Games will begin Friday at 6 p.m. with Toty’s/Woodpecker versus Tiki Bar. There will be two games played at 7 p.m. with Sunset Junction playing The Bomb Squad and Rowdy Rhinelander playing Bucketheads/B&K Concrete.

Coyote Transport will play Flyin’ Finn at 8 p.m.,

ERRA seeks ACE coordinator

The Eagle River Recreation Association (ERRA) is seeking applicants for the position of ACE coordinator.

Some of the duties of the position include overseeing the evaluations and evaluators, providing the ERRA board with recommendations for coaches, and overseeing the coaches and development of players.

To be considered for the position, email skate@­erra.com with a letter of interest by Aug. 4 and include qualifications for the position.

Biegel, Kobach tie to win senior men’s golf tourney

Ken Biegel and John Kobach tied with a score of 83 to best a field of 47 golfers Sunday at the 11th annual State Farm Insurance Senior Men’s Golf Tournament at Eagle River Golf Course.

The event was sponsored by State Farm agent Paul Belcher.

Competitors ranged in age from 55 to 84 and played 18 holes of golf in five flights.

Headwaters charity golf-tournament scheduled Aug. 11 in Rhinelander

The 29th annual Headwaters Foundation Charity Golf Classic will be held at the Rhinelander Country Club, Monday, Aug. 11, with shotgun starts at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The event is a four-person scramble, 18-hole tournament. The entry fee is $95 per person which includes golf, cart and dinner.

Following dinner, tournament awards and door prizes will be presented, raffles will be held and numerous items donated by area merchants will be auctioned.

The event is held for the benefit of Headwaters Inc.,

YMCA holds golf scramble

The 14th Y Golf Scramble, sponsored by RMM Solutions and Ministry Health Care, was held at Pinewood Country Club on July 18.

The event saw 19 teams participate in the scramble. Team S3T1 — Bob Thoms, Ken Schoppe, Kass Schoppe, and Kevin Schoppe — won first place in the golf scramble.

Second place was Team Bing — Terry Bingham, Herb Winter, Mike Winter and Tim Winter.

Volleyball camp attracts nearly 70
Northland Pines volleyball camp lead coach Rod Wilde showed a camp participant the proper arm form for spiking a ball. Wilde played on the U.S. Olympic team from 1982-’84.

Rod Wilde, a member of the 1982-’84 U.S. Olympic men’s volleyball team, brought his 2014 Summer Volleyball Camp to the Northland Pines High School field house July 7-9.
The camp, coordinated by Northland Pines varsity coach Julie Smith, attracted 31 high school girls and 38 fifth- through eighth-grade players.
Smith said she wanted to offer advanced instruction on volleyball skills to area athletes and went to Wilde and his staff of standout college athletes to offer the three-day camp.

Moonlight Run raises roughly $15,000 for wellness center

The inaugural Moonlight Run fundraiser for the Pines Community Wellness Center raised approximately $15,000 through the participation of 314 registrants.
There also were 47 children registered for the one-kilometer race.
“The first Moonlight Run fundraiser for the Pines Community Wellness Center was a great success,” said District Administrator Mike Richie. “Everyone had a great time and we received numerous compliments from our runners on the entire event.”
