Eagles beat West Salem 3-1, but lose to Ashland in final

The Northland Pines girls soccer team beat West Salem 3-1 in the WIAA Division 3 Sectional semifinal game last Thursday, but lost to Ashland 2-1 Saturday in the Sectional final — just missing a trip to the State Tournament this week.

Both teams in the Division 3 Sectional final game started a little hesitant, playing for a trip to State and playing on a turf field at Chippewa Falls.

Pines golfers finish second in league, seventh in Sectional

Northland Pines High School recently ended its golf season in second place in the Great Northern Conference (GNC).

Lakeland won the conference championship with 47 points. Northland Pines followed with 39.5 points. The remaining teams were Antigo with 35 points, Medford with 23 points, Rhinelander with 20 points, Mosinee with 18.5 points and Tomahawk with 13 points.

Three Lakes to host 34th Softball Classic

The 34th annual Three Lakes Softball Classic will be Friday through this Sunday, June 20-22, with $600 going to the first-place team.

The men’s double-elimination slow-pitch tournament has a $125 entry fee. Other payouts will be $400 for second, $300 for third and $200 for fourth.

The tournament will feature 20 teams from Three Lakes, Rhinelander and Eagle River, as well as southern Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan.

This year’s event also will feature U-17 girls fast-pitch softball,

Hunter Mathison of Three Lakes recently earned first team all-conference recognition in the Northern Lakes Conference (NLC), while teammates Michael LoGalbo and Matt Wilkowski earned second team honors.

Junior Kaleb Remick and sophomore Danny Winesburg of Three Lakes earned honorable mention.

Mathison, a junior, was second in the NLC for batting, with a batting average of .571. He had 16 hits and seven RBIs. He also had 10 stolen bases.

Purple Pride Golf Fundraiser slated Sunday in Eagle River

The Purple Pride Golf Fundraiser to help fight pancreatic cancer will be held Sunday, June 22, at Eagle River Golf Club.

Golfing will be limited to the first 40 two-person teams with paid registration. The format will be four-person teams consisting of two men and two women. Two-person teams will be paired to make a foursome.

Scoring will consist of the women’s scramble score plus the men’s scramble score on each hole.

The entry fee is $70 per player and includes 18 holes of golf,

The U14 Blizzards recently won the Blue Devils AAA Hockey Invite Champions held in Onalaska. The team consists of skaters from all across northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Discovery Center sets Just Tri It! triathlon

The North Lakeland Discovery Center will host its annual Just Tri It! triathlon Saturday, June 28, at 8:30 a.m.

Athletes may register by Friday, June 27, to receive a discount rate and a complimentary race shirt.

This event typically attracts more than 200 racers, and is meant for both first-timers and experienced triathletes.

YMCA plans golf scramble

The YMCA?of the Northwoods will sponsor its 14th annual golf scramble Friday, July 18, at Pinewood Country Club in Harshaw.

Registration is now open and costs $75 per person if signed-up by July 11. The cost is $85 after that date.

Check-in will take place at 8 a.m. and golf will begin at 9 a.m. Lunch will be served on the course at 11 a.m.
