Pines boys win Tomahawk Invite; Ozelie, Puffer lead Eagles in victory

The Northland Pines High School boys track team recently won the Tomahawk Invitational for the second time in three years.

The Eagles grabbed 154 points at the event, followed by Hurley with 111.5, Tomahawk with 108, Rhinelander with 88, Phillips with 76.5, Ladysmith with 50, Three Lakes with 49 and Mercer with 34.

Lady Jays soccer gets two more wins

The Three Lakes High School girls soccer team put two more games in the win column last week after a 3-0 victory over Bayfield-Washburn Tuesday and a 1-0 win over Amherst-Iola-Scandinavia Thursday.

The Lady Jays also lost a game 2-0 last Monday to Kingsford, Mich.

Local tennis group plans various summer events

The Greater Eagle River Tennis Association (GERTA) will sponsor a number of tennis opportunities throughout the summer.

A?youth tennis camp is planned for children ages 4 through 18 June 17, 19, 24 and 26. The camp will feature one hour of instruction for 4- to 10-year-olds from 1 to 2 p.m. each day, while there will be two hours of instruction for 10- to 18-year-olds from 2 to 4 p.m.

Pines golfers take second in GNC meet
The Northland Pines High School golf team took second place at the Great Northern Conference (GNC) meet at Eagle River Golf Course last Tuesday. Winning the meet was Lakeland with a combined score of 342, followed by Pines with 356, Medford with 371, Antigo with 377, Mosinee with 387, Rhinelander with 389 and Tomahawk with 410. The meet medalist was Dan Donovan of Lakeland, who shot a score of 80 in 18 holes. Leading the way for the Eagles was Sam Lacko with a score of 84. The Northland Pines girls soccer team improved to 7-1-1 in the Great Northern Conference (GNC) with wins over Mosinee and Antigo last week.

The Eagles started the week with a 4-0 victory over Mosinee last Tuesday.

Eagle River Speedway kicks off 40th season of stock car racing

The defending class champions in four classes opened the 40th year of racing at Eagle River Speedway by winning their respective features.

Winning one of the other classes was the defending points champion from another northern Wisconsin track.

Jesse Aho from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan started his trek on an unprecedented fourth consecutive class championship in the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds by holding off Phillips’ Cole Spacek and George Truscott of Greenland, Mich.

The Northland Pines Eagles baseball team played just one game last week, losing to Lakeland 1-0 last Thursday in a Great Northern Conference (GNC) contest.

The Eagles’ Tanner Beaman pitched a complete game striking out nine, but the Pines offense couldn’t get much of an attack going or pick up a clutch hit.

Bluejays track team finishes regular season

In the final week of the regular track season, the Three Lakes Bluejays traveled to Shiocton last Tuesday  and to Bonduel Thursday for their last opportunities to tune up before the WIAA?Regional, which was slated for Tuesday, May 27.

Both events saw great weather and good competition, with six teams in Shiocton and 12 at Bonduel.

At Shiocton, Three Lakes competed against athletes from Coleman, Iola-Scandinavia, Little Wolf, Wolf River Lutheran and the home team of Shiocton.
