Area athletes encouraged to try triathlon Aug. 11

Swimmers, bikers and runners looking for a new challenge may consider a triathlon. Area athletes are being encouraged to join hundreds of other triathletes at the edge of Clear Lake at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, for  the “See Me Tri” the Minocqua-area Triathlon.
This year’s triathlon will offer both sprint and Olympic distances for teams or individuals. The distances for the sprint event are: swim, 500 meters; bike, 20 kilometers (12.4

Hundreds to take to streets for fourth Moonshine Run

It’s time to lace up the running shoes and start training for the Eagle River YMCA’s fourth annual Moonshine Run, set for midnight Saturday, July 7, in downtown Eagle River.
Last year’s event drew more than 300 racers and more are expected this year, according to Shayne Wilfer, Marshfield Clinic information center consultant and Moonshine Run volunteer coordinator.
The race course will start at the historic railroad depot near the intersection of Wall and Railroad streets. Participants will travel through Eagle River with views of the Chain of Lakes before the final stretch through downtown Eagle River.

WIAA approves move for girls State tourney

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) will pursue agreements to keep the State Boys Basketball Tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison and to move the State Girls Basketball Tournament to the Resch Center in Green Bay for 2013 and 2014.

Packers Family Night set Aug. 3 at Lambeau

Green Bay Packers fans who live in the North Woods and don’t have season tickets will have an opportunity to watch their beloved Pack and experience Lambeau Field this summer.
The annual Green Bay Packers Family Night, presented by Bellin Health, will take place Friday, Aug. 3, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Lambeau Field.
The event will benefit the Wendy’s Wonderful Kids foster care adoption program, a signature program of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption.

Journeys Marathon is giant step for teen

With the 16th annual Journeys Marathon now marked in the record books, plans are already in the works for the 17th annual marathon and other events on the back roads of Vilas County.
The number of race participants wasn’t a record in 2012, but this year’s event — on a beautiful day in Vilas County — still hosted 979 participants from 18 different states and Ontario, Canada. The record number of runners was 1,027 in 2010.

Journeys runners need fan support

Spectators are being urged to come out to Riverview Park in Eagle River to cheer on the runners in the 16th annual Journeys Marathon this Saturday, May 12.
The Eagle River Area Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center has announced that nearly 800 runners from more than a dozen states have registered for the Journeys Marathon, to be held on the back roads of Vilas County.

Angel Golf Spectacular planned in St. Germain

With the early spring, most North Woods residents are thinking two things — fishing and golf. It also means that the biggest golf event in this area, the Angel Golf Spectacular, is just around the corner.
Teams can now register for the 16th annual Angel Golf Spectacular, a fundraising event for the Angel On My Shoulder program, set for Friday, June 8, at St. Germain Golf Club.
The golf tournament will be a scramble format with registration at 8 a.m. and a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. with celebrity guests from the Green Bay Packers, according to Lolly Rose, founder of Angel On My Shoulder.
“The list of celebrities has not been announced yet, but in the past, former Packers nose tackle Gilbert Brown has been a regular,” said Rose.

Journeys Marathon still four weeks away

While the Boston Marathon was held Monday with temperatures near 90 degrees, it’s not likely it will be that warm when the gun sounds for the start of the  16th annual Journeys Marathon set for Saturday, May 12.
Sponsored by the Eagle River Area Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center, the event will take place on scenic Vilas County back roads between Eagle River and Boulder Junction.

Concussion legislation designed to help athletes

Each year, hundreds of athletes across the state sustain head injuries, including concussions.
For that reason, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker signed youth concussion legislation into law April 2 at Lambeau Field. Support for the bill came from physicians, student-athletes and other organizations, including the Green Bay Packers.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has exhibited an unwavering commitment to the adoption of concussion legislation nationwide, starting with the Washington state concussion law named after middle school football player Zackery Lystedt, who was injured during a game in 2006.
