Eagle River's DePuydt presented Ironman award

Local sports fans who have watched any amount of hockey in Eagle River know that Mark “Mugsy” DePuydt is an ironman when it comes to playing between the pipes.
DePuydt was a longtime goalie for the Eagle River Falcons men’s hockey team, has played in numerous three-on-three alumni tournaments and is a mainstay in the USA Hockey Pond Hockey Tournament held each February on Dollar Lake in Eagle River. He’s a regular at the historic Eagle River Sports Arena when there is open hockey for adults.

WIAA makes changes for basketball season

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association   (WIAA) Board of Control approved a number of winter sports coaches’ recommendations at its June meeting, with the most significant changes impacting basketball.
The board supported an amended recommendation to move the girls basketball season back to its traditional dates, with the State Tournament a week prior to the boys tourney starting in 2012-’13.

Craig Ludwig returning for defensive hockey camp

Former National Hockey League (NHL) defenseman Craig Ludwig will be returning to the area for an All Defensive All Pro Hockey Camp.
Ludwig, an Eage River native and Northland Pines High School graduate, will host the camp Tuesday and Wednesday, July 12 and 13, at the Rhinelander Ice Arena. Registration forms for the camp are due by this Friday, June 17.

Rohr's canoe race has important cause

Jeff and Marcia Rohr, owners of Rohr’s Wilderness Tours in Conover, are preparing for the seventh annual Callie Rohr Memorial Canoe and Kayak Race this Saturday and Sunday, June 11-12, to benefit children’s brain tumor research.
The Rohrs have raised more than $76,000 over the last six years and have funded three research programs. This year, the race proceeds will go to Dr. Tomita’s research program at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Ill.
“It’s a great feeling to know where our donated dollars go and to be making a real contribution to find a cure,” said Marcia Rohr.

Oldenburg Sports Park headed in right direction

Recreational facilities in the greater Eagle River area took a huge step forward with the dedication of Oldenburg Sports Park on Saturday.
While there have been youth soccer fields for many years at the Highway G site, the expansion of the park to include baseball and softball fields, additional soccer fields, expansive parking areas and a pavilion now make it a top-notch recreational facility.

Angel Golf Spectacular to feature three Packers

Teams can still register for the 15th annual Angel Golf Spectacular, a fundraising event for the Angel On My Shoulder program, set for Friday, June 10, at St. Germain Golf Club with three special guests.
The golf tournament will be a scramble format with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m., with celebrity guests including former Green Bay Packers Gilbert Brown, William Henderson and Doug Evans, according to Lolly Rose, founder of Angel On My Shoulder.

Oldenburg Sports Park to be dedicated May 28

A historic event will take place at noon in Eagle River Saturday, May 28. That’s when Oldenburg Sports Park, located at 5625 Highway G, will be dedicated.
The park is a collaborative effort between Vilas County and community-based sports clubs. The new Vilas County park was made possible by a 2009 contribution of $325,000 from Wayne Oldenburg, owner of Oldenburg Group.
The recreation facility is home to Headwaters Youth Soccer Association (HYSA), United Northwoods Soccer (UNS) and soon the Eagle River area youth baseball and adult softball programs. Oldenburg also committed another $10,000 for dugouts for the facility.
The park is currently leased by HYSA from the county for $1 per year. Through the middle of July, it is being used and maintained by UNS. UNS attracts players from across the county. Towns represented in the program are Eagle River, Phelps, Three Lakes, St. Germain, Conover, Land O’ Lakes, Lac du Flambeau, Arbor Vitae and Lake Tomahawk. The HYSA fall recreation program also includes players from Sugar Camp and the game schedule includes teams for the Minocqua/Arbor Vitae/Woodruff area club. Spectators are urged to support runners

Spectators are being urged to come out to Riverview Park in Eagle River to cheer on the runners in the 15th annual Journeys Marathon this Saturday, May 14.
The Eagle River Area Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center has announced that more than 700 runners from 15 different states have registered for the Journeys Marathon, to be held on the back roads of Vilas County.

Girls golf program set in Eagle River

Girls in the greater Eagle River area interested in golf have a great opportunity to learn the game through a program planned this spring and summer at the Eagle River Golf Course.

Volunteers still needed for 15th annual Journeys

Journeys Marathon is set for Saturday, May 14, in Eagle River and community help is needed to make the 15th anniversary event the best one ever, according to Kim Emerson, events coordinator for the Eagle River Area Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center.
Volunteers are needed both on Friday, May 13, and Saturday, May 14, according to Emerson.
