Hall of Fame to induct four hockey supporters

Four individuals dedicated to the sport of hockey will be inducted to the Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame in Eagle River Saturday, Sept. 10.
Those named include Wayne Caufield of Greendale, Jerry Kennedy of Madison, Gregg Nelson of Randolph and Mary Ann Robinson of Manitowoc, the first woman to be inducted into the hall of fame. These four individuals and their families will be the guests of honor at ceremonies planned for Eagle River.

Fall sports practices kick off this week

Even though the calendar just flipped over to August, some area high school student athletes will begin practicing for the fall sports season this week.
Coaches are going through equipment, athletic directors are making final adjustments in the schedules and athletes are starting to get in shape with personal training and contact days with coaches.
At Northland Pines and Three Lakes, football practice begins today, Wednesday, Aug. 3, with coaches issuing equipment and holding the first workouts. Boys soccer practice gets under way

It's back to football for Green Bay fans

It’s back to football at Titletown.
Green Bay Packers players will report to Lambeau Field Friday, July 29, and training camp will see its first practice Saturday night, July 30. It’s an exciting time for Packers fans, as Green Bay is coming off a Super Bowl championship earlier this year.
The popular Packers Family Night, presented by Bellin Health, is set for Saturday, Aug. 6, with tickets on sale now.

Chain Skimmers to host jump clinic, tournament

The Chain Skimmers Water-ski Show team is currently in the middle of its 41st season, wowing fans with thrilling shows three days a week with the theme based on the popular movie “Grease.”
But the Chain Skimmers also hold many special events throughout the summer. The team will host the Mats “The Mobius” Mirick Jump Clinic and Tournament Friday, July 29, at the Lake Pleasant ski site, located 12 miles north of Eagle River.
Mirick, a friend and teammate of the Chain Skimmers, unexpectedly passed away in early May.

Staffen, Koller, teams to be inducted at Pines

The Eagle River/Northland Pines High School Athletic Hall of Fame Committee will induct a standout athlete, a long-time coach and two girls basketball teams into the hall of fame this fall.
The athlete to be inducted is Gene E. Staffen, a 1947 graduate of Eagle River High School, and the coach to be inducted is Dave Koller, a cross-country and track coach at the high school for more than 30 years.

Eagle River's DePuydt presented Ironman award

Local sports fans who have watched any amount of hockey in Eagle River know that Mark “Mugsy” DePuydt is an ironman when it comes to playing between the pipes.
DePuydt was a longtime goalie for the Eagle River Falcons men’s hockey team, has played in numerous three-on-three alumni tournaments and is a mainstay in the USA Hockey Pond Hockey Tournament held each February on Dollar Lake in Eagle River. He’s a regular at the historic Eagle River Sports Arena when there is open hockey for adults.

WIAA makes changes for basketball season

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association   (WIAA) Board of Control approved a number of winter sports coaches’ recommendations at its June meeting, with the most significant changes impacting basketball.
The board supported an amended recommendation to move the girls basketball season back to its traditional dates, with the State Tournament a week prior to the boys tourney starting in 2012-’13.

Craig Ludwig returning for defensive hockey camp

Former National Hockey League (NHL) defenseman Craig Ludwig will be returning to the area for an All Defensive All Pro Hockey Camp.
Ludwig, an Eage River native and Northland Pines High School graduate, will host the camp Tuesday and Wednesday, July 12 and 13, at the Rhinelander Ice Arena. Registration forms for the camp are due by this Friday, June 17.

Rohr's canoe race has important cause

Jeff and Marcia Rohr, owners of Rohr’s Wilderness Tours in Conover, are preparing for the seventh annual Callie Rohr Memorial Canoe and Kayak Race this Saturday and Sunday, June 11-12, to benefit children’s brain tumor research.
The Rohrs have raised more than $76,000 over the last six years and have funded three research programs. This year, the race proceeds will go to Dr. Tomita’s research program at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Ill.
“It’s a great feeling to know where our donated dollars go and to be making a real contribution to find a cure,” said Marcia Rohr.

Oldenburg Sports Park headed in right direction

Recreational facilities in the greater Eagle River area took a huge step forward with the dedication of Oldenburg Sports Park on Saturday.
While there have been youth soccer fields for many years at the Highway G site, the expansion of the park to include baseball and softball fields, additional soccer fields, expansive parking areas and a pavilion now make it a top-notch recreational facility.
