Trees center, library set annual golf outings

Two local community organizations will have important fundraising events the next few weeks, with proceeds to be raised through two popular golf outings.

Trees For Tomorrow in Eagle River is seeking golfers for its 12th annual Scholarship Golf Outing set for Friday, May 30, at the Eagle River Golf Course and the Walter E. Olson Memorial Library Foundation will hold its 20th annual Golf Classic Sunday, June 8, at  the same golf course.

Journeys provides inspirational stories

The 18th annual Journeys Marathon, sponsored by the Eagle River Area Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center last Saturday, featured many inspirational stories of runners of all ages.

Some runners completed their first marathon while others established personal goals for the time it took them to complete the 26.2-mile course from near Boulder Junction to Eagle River or the 13.1-mile half marathon course.

The race also included a runner from Peshtigo, who ran his 99th full marathon competing at Journeys. Chad Counard will run his 100th marathon this weekend.

Spectators urged to support runners

Spectators are being urged to come out to Riverview Park in Eagle River to cheer on the runners in the 18th annual Journeys Marathon this Saturday, May 10.

The Eagle River Area Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center has announced that more than 800 runners from more than a dozen states have already registered for the Journeys Marathon, to be held on the back roads of Vilas County.

Top scholar athletes to be honored May 4

Wisconsin’s 32 top scholar athletes, 16 senior girls and 16 senior boys from public and nonpublic high schools, have been selected as the 2014 State Scholar Athlete recipients by the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA).

These individuals, who achieved the top combined classroom and sports performances during their four years in high school, were selected as winners for the 31st annual 2014 WIAA Scholar Athlete Awards underwritten by Marshfield Clinic.

Private schools face closer look from WIAA

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) is starting to make some progress when it comes to private schools dominating tournament play.

The membership of the WIAA voted to move the discussion regarding the impact of private schools on the association to committee at its annual meeting last week in Stevens Point.

While an amendment that would have applied a 1.65 multiplier to private member schools for tournament divisional placements did not reach a vote, the membership voted to send the issue to committee by a 352-77 count. The amendment originated from a petition submitted
