It’s time to start training for five Journeys events

With most area back roads finally free of ice and snow, there is plenty of time to train for one of the five events at Journeys Marathon.

The Eagle River Area Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center will host the 18th annual Journeys Mara­thon Saturday, May 10.

It’s been a long, cold winter, maybe one of the worst on record, so getting out to run or walk on North Woods roads is a breath of fresh air. You might consider turning that daily outing into a training session for the Journeys.

Badgers headed to the Final Four

It’s a great time to be a Wisconsin basketball fan, as the Badgers defeated Arizona 64-63 in overtime in a physical West Region final Saturday night to reach the Final Four.

The No. 2-seed Badgers (30-7) will make their first Final Four appearance since 2000, and first for 69-year-old coach Bo Ryan, who earned his 704th career victory.

Wisconsin will now face No. 8 seed Kentucky (28-10), a young team that defeated Michigan 75-72 in the Midwest Regional Sunday. The other half of the Final Four bracket features No. 1 seed Florida (36-2) from the South Regional against No. 7 seed Connecticut

Herfindahl rips up cross-country series

Eighteen-year-old Zach Herfindahl of Eagle River had another outstanding season, racing in the USXC Series — a snowmobile cross-country racing circuit that provides ice and terrain for racers across the Midwest.

Herfindahl, a Northland Pines senior and son of Sue and Greg Herfindahl, races for Arctic Cat on the Christian Brothers Racing team out of Fertile, Minn.

Girls state hoops teams headed to Green Bay

The 39th annual Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) Girls Basketball State Championships will take place this Thursday through Saturday, March 20-22, at the Resch Center in Green Bay.

This is the second time the girls basketball State Tournament will be conducted in Green Bay.

For those who want to make the trip, ticket price for the tourney is $10 per session when purchased at the Resch Center. Tickets for the tournament will also be available for purchase online at the Ticket Star website at

Seasons come to end for girls hoops teams

The winter sports season officially came to an end for Northland Pines, Three Lakes and Phelps athletes and fans last Friday and Saturday as all three schools finished tournament play.

Girls basketball teams at all three schools participated in Regional tournament action last week, but none of the teams reached this weekend’s Sectional.

The Three Lakes girls, coached by Michele Brown, made a nice run in the tournament in Division 5, advancing to the Regional final with wins over Florence and Suring. The Lady Jays then faced Goodman-Pembine and lost to the Northern Lakes Conference foe in the Regional final.
