Run and Try-Athlon planned this weekend

Land O’ Lakes and Phelps will host fitness activities this weekend geared to runners, walkers, bikers, canoeists and kayakers of all ages.

A?five-mile run/walk/bike will take place in Land O' Lakes this Saturday, Sept. 14, and will benefit the Amputee Blade Runners (ABR), a nonprofit organization that helps provide free running prosthetics for amputees.

Meanwhile, the Phelps Chamber of Commerce will hold its Colorama Try-Athlon for individuals or three-person relay teams.

Hockey hall to induct former Falcons coach

Three individuals will be inducted into the Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame this Saturday, Sept. 7, in Eagle River, including Pete Krueger of Rhinelander,  Jim E. Brown of Mosinee and Gary Suter of Lac du Flambeau.

In addition, at the same ceremony, the Wisconsin High School Hockey Coaches Association will induct the first member to the Wisconsin High School Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Selected for that is former Madison Memorial High School hockey coach Vic Levine of Madison.

High school sports show gain in athletes

As I was checking out the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association’s (WIAA) website this week, I noticed an interesting article about high school sports participation being an all-time high nationally.

Participation in high school sports nationwide increased for the 24th consecutive year in 2012-’13 and passed the 7.7 million mark for the first time, according to the annual High School Athletics Participation Survey conducted by the National Federation of State High School Associations.

Fall sports start for area athletes

While area high school students won’t head back to classes until after Labor Day, athletic teams at Northland Pines, Three Lakes and Phelps are already back on the practice and game fields, and courts.

Most teams started captains’ practices in late July and early August, and by the second week of August many teams had started organized workouts with their coaches. For some players, it’s meant meeting new coaches and adjusting to new philosophies and coaching styles.

Pines hall of famers to be inducted Aug. 30

Area sports fans are reminded the Eagle River/Northland Pines High School ­Athletic Hall of Fame Committee will induct two standout athletes, a longtime coach and a State Championship hockey team to the hall Friday, Aug. 30.

The two athletes to be inducted are 1986 graduate Shawn (Gremban) Sullivan and 1973 graduate Joe Sparks. They will be joined at the ceremony by former football and track coach Ray Dillahunt. In addition, the 1984 State Championship boys hockey team will be inducted as a team.

Sullivan was a four-time letter winner on the Northland Pines
