Registration to begin for 10th hockey event

Wow! Can you believe that the 2015 Labatt Blue/USA Hockey National Pond Hockey Tournament will be the 10th on the Dollar Lake ice near Eagle River?

The Eagle River Area Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center announced that registration for the 10th annual pond hockey tournament on Dollar Lake Feb. 6-8 will open at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, July 23.

Entries into the tournament will be on a first-come,

Packers Pro Shop ready for season

The new Packers Pro Shop, located in the Lambeau Field Atrium’s expanded lobby level, will host a grand opening celebration this Thursday, July 17, a sign that the Green Bay Packers season is just around the corner.

The Packers will open the preseason schedule Aug. 9 against the Tennessee Titans at historic Lambeau Field. The regular season starts Sept. 4 at Seattle.

The Packers Pro Shop is a  one-of-a-kind shopping experience for pro football fans from across Wisconsin.

WIAA makes changes that impact regulations

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) Board of Control convened for its annual summer meeting and acted on coaches advisory committee recommendations for basketball, football player-on-player contact policy and hockey replay that impact the 2014-’15 season regulations.

Six of the recommendations made in basketball received board approval. A six-quarter waiver will be provided to programs that have 12 or fewer players across two levels beginning in 2014-’15. Also passed were provisions to increase the number of games for freshman-only teams from 20 to 22

Pines hall to induct 3 individuals, team

The Eagle River/Northland Pines High School ­Athletic Hall of Fame Committee announced it will induct a stand-out athlete, a golf coach, a long-time sports supporter and a football team to the hall Friday, Aug. 22.

The athlete to be inducted is 1985 graduate Dennis Snedden, along with former golf coach Rollie Christensen and supporter Jerry “Bucky” Burkett. They will be joined by the 1981 football team at the 2014 induction ceremony and other festivities.

Snedden was a key member of the 1984 State Champion Northland Pines hockey team. After high school, he spent two years playing Junior A hockey for the Madison Capitols where he was an All-Star both seasons. He then earned a hockey scholarship at the University

Two sports parents retire bleacher seats

Our lives have officially changed.

Last Wednesday evening was the Northland Pines girls soccer team’s end-of-season banquet and I soon realized attending the dinner was my last official duty as a high school sports parent.

For the past seven years, my wife, Sue, and I have been on the sports trail, watching and supporting our two children during their high school athletic careers. Both our children were three-sport athletes at Northland Pines. Our son, Taylor, played soccer, basketball and baseball, while our daughter, Carly, competed in volleyball, basketball and soccer. It was Carly’s soccer banquet that brought it all to an end.

The combination of their high school careers spanned seven years,
