Do it now!

On Sunday, Jan. 30, my husband, Bill, would have been 80 years young. I say young because he was truly young in spirit. Before he got sick, people guessed his age to be 15 to 20 years younger than he actually was. Our plan was to be at the Cathedral of Chartres in France to celebrate this birthday. We knew in the last couple of years that the dream would never come true and are grateful we had so many other adventures while he was in good health.

Shocked? I doubt it

There is very little difference between the stance someone takes when standing for a moment of silence and standing in shame. In both, the head is down. I noticed this similarity when I was looking at pictures from the sad Tucson shooting. As coincidental as this may be, in this instance there may be more significance to this similarity than meets the eye.
How many of us are ashamed of the violence in our country? How many of us are standing in

Precious words

We had a lot of snow in December — a lot! Luckily I have a wonderful helper who plows my driveway and sidewalks for me. He is a farmer who works part time plowing in winter and mowing in the summer. He is reliable and does a great job.
When I saw him clearing my driveway today, we chatted briefly. He told me he had started

Only one resolution

A new year, a new day, a new moment — each one significant in its own way. Each one deserves the best of who we are. Each one will be more meaningful and fulfilling if we are present to it. Each one is an opportunity to begin again.
So what do you want to do with the next 365 days? How do you want to live them? What are your goals and dreams? What are the obstacles you can see from here? What changes do you need

It is not too late

Busy week ahead? Still going to parties? Having a party? Preparing a big meal? The list is long. Days are exhausting, fun, boring, exciting, expensive, well-planned, chaotic and so much more.
Soon it will all be over for another year. New Year’s resolutions will go into effect for at least — well, a week or so.
In the meantime, many people around you need your time. How can I even mention that when

Holidays and grieving

This column is written for you who have experienced the loss of a loved one. You know who you are and you know how tough the year or years have been. Whether you have lost a child, a spouse, a parent, sibling, friend or another beloved, the holidays are tough. I have relived many Christmas seasons during the past few weeks. I remember Bill’s and my first Christmas together and how our puppy knocked over our very tall Christmas tree while we were at church and he

Will it make you happy?

Our town is celebrating its annual Country Christmas. One of the events is a tour of four homes unique in their architecture and Christmas décor. One home had 27 Christmas trees. Last year, one home had 17 TVs — I counted them as I walked from room to room. Another home had country views out of every window on two levels and incredible art everywhere in the home, as well as an office I would so enjoy.

The real gift

We are well into the holiday season now — only a few more shopping days, and shop we do. Shoppers are rushing through stores and Web sites as you read this. They rush in an attempt to take advantage of sales. I can’t blame folks for wanting to save money in this economy, but I also wonder how much more people spend because of the sales.
A friend told me her family no longer exchanges Christmas gifts. Everyone is an adult, and gift

New habits to feel better

I was walking through the food court at the mall, observing dozens of high school kids on their lunch break from the school down the street. The music over the speakers was unbearably loud. At least eight or 10 televisions were scattered about the space, kids were crying — some were screaming — and the echo of the voices in this area bounced off the walls. How does a digestive system function under these conditions? How do our bodies take the abuse we impose on them?

Remembering gratitude

Gratitude — it is a time of gratitude. On Thursday, many people will gather around a table, put aside differences and celebrate their friendship, love and gratitude. Expressing gratitude is so very important. Not only is it important to express gratitude to family, friends and strangers for what they do for us or give us, but more important is the habit of expressing gratitude each day,
